Sarah's story

"Ark Aid allowed me to  express myself through practicing all kinds of visual art, it helped me realize what brought me to such a dark place."

When I first moved to the community where I now live, the East Village, I was in a dark place. When I started taking art classes at a community studio at the Ark Aid Mission called The New School of Colour, it began to help a lot. It was a sort of therapy. It helped me work through what I was going through. By expressing myself through practicing all kinds of visual art, it helped me realize what brought me to such a dark place.

The Ark Aid itself has helped me a lot too. The collective energy of people who became my friends, and who are now like family, have helped me to grow as a person. I am producing work I never thought I would be capable of.

Art has given me a new purpose. It's almost like a second career. By having my art displayed in the community too, it helps me feel, even more, like I belong here. And none of this would have happened if it wasn't for the Ark Aid, The New School of Colour and the supporting and welcoming environment of the whole East Village.
