In September of 2011, 62-year-old Rada Podgorica knew that something wasn’t right. Her left breast began to bruise. She had a feeling - a bad feeling. Intuition, or the Bosnian pragmatism that she speaks of, led her to an inevitable conclusion: she had breast cancer.
Legin is a 19 year old London resident who has experienced emotional and mental distress. He receives support from the London InterCommunity Health Centre’ Youth Outreach Worker Program where they assist with steering him in a positive direction and leading a helping hand with food, clothing, and advice. He uses art as a means to express and share his creative skills.
About his creative process:
This art piece started with a tree; this is the first time that I have completed a large abstract with a tree as the focal point. The tree means motherhood to me; the atom (molecule) represents the interconnectedness of the picture, the centre of the tree, controlling the tree, as the nucleus controls everything in the atom.
Once I had created the tree, the next focal point is the gates of heaven in the top left corner. The eye to the right of the picture is an Egyptian symbol to relate to the ancient civilization of mysteries, the eye serves to connect the individual mystery of what is beyond the gate for the viewer… Your eye, your perspective.
Canada has free, high-quality healthcare for everyone. So why do the richest 10% of people live seven years longer than the poorest? Deep poverty can be associated with a drop in life expectancy of 20 years or more. If we look at both life expectancy and years lived with disability, the rich are 39% healthier than the poor.
"Canada has progressive laws on racial discrimination but through my eyes and experiences a disturbing climate of racism permeate our community."
"Right now my goals are to stay clean and get a job. I hope that my community gets better and safe."
“Trinket” stared up at the gray sky and the falling rain. At least he was safe from the rain while he was under the bridge, he thought. He scratched his beard, loosening the three day old bread crumbs and wondered when the rain would stop.
"I think that history should be acknowledged and celebrated more often."
"I have a passion for working with people and coordinating community programs. I want to follow this passion and see where it goes."
The alone lead solitary lives, and sometimes suffer from loneliness. This is not good living. A new economy of human inter-relationships will build more healthy neighborhoods, and will inspire the community to thrive.
For our community, I hope people will preserve the plants, reforestation and green spaces. I hope it’s not just for right now but that it continues in the future all the beautiful spaces, green spaces and vegetation
